Reflections of the New York State Capitol Building Although it is often overshadowed by its much larger rival, New York City, New York State's capital, Albany, is far from small and boring. Located a comfortable 136 miles north of NYC, Albany offers a perfect alternative for those close by who do not want to be too overwhelmed with a big city feel. Nestled on the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, Albany boasts a stunning river setting that is ideal for fun, adventure and excitement, as well as relaxation and rejuvenation. Steeped in history, Albany is the oldest surviving European settlement from the original 13 colonies, giving visitors the chance to discover three centuries of architecture. Home to extraordinary museums, theatres and restaurants, Albany is bursting with exciting things for you to do and fun just never seems to end. 1. New York State Museum If local and state history is what you are after, you really can't go wrong with the New York State Museum. The museum is highly regarded as an educational and research institution that conducts systematic investigations into the geology, biology, anthropology and history of New York. Its vision statement is to "provide leadership in the translation, interpretation, and explanation of the history and evolution of New York State and the inhabitants so as to create excitement in discovery and learning". The museum is a great place to spend a morning and you may even choose to stay the entire day. Exhibits such as the Adirondack Wilderness, Art for the People, Birds of New York, Fire Engine Hall and Metropolis Hall are extremely popular and will keep you and the kids entertained for ages. 2. Albany Institute of History and Art A visit to the Albany Institute of History and Art will take you on a journey into one of the oldest museums in North America, giving you a glimpse of life in Old Albany and the Upper Hudson Valley. This amazing museum is home to a unique collection of over 30,000 objects, including furniture, clothing, paintings, silver and photographs. Browse the historic artefacts and absorb the history that is simply emanating from them. The permanent exhibits here are also extremely popular. The most visited of these would have to be the Hudson River Panorama, which demonstrates over 400 years of history, art and culture. The Lincoln: The Albany Connection, Ancient Egypt, Trades and Culture and 19th century American Sculpture exhibits are also highly visited, making a visit to this museum even more worthwhile. 3. Historic Cherry Hill To further your adventures and experiences of the local history be sure to pay a visit to Historic Cherry Hill. This beautiful 18th century mansion sits on a wooded hill that overlooks the majestic Hudson River. This is the former home of Catherine Putman Rankin and her family, who resided here from 1884 until 1963. The history of her family is evident through the huge collection of antiques, textiles and other historical artefacts. With a total of over 20,000 artefacts and 30,000 manuscripts, you can be assured that you will find something intriguing here. 4. Albany Aqua Ducks and Trolleys If you are on a family holiday and aren't afraid to look a little goofy, the Amphibious Aqua Ducks and Trolleys will be perfect for you. These unique and exciting vehicles will take you on a journey through Albany, offering a unique educational and fun filled tour for the whole family. While on land you will be taken to historic places likes the Albany City Hall, the New York State Capitol, Washington Park and the Empire State Plaza. You will then be plunged into the waters of the Hudson River where you will able to experience a mariner's view of the city's skyline. On the water you will be able to marvel at the Dutch Apple Cruise Ship, the Railroad Bridge and Hudson's River Way. This is a quirky way to experience the sights, smells and sounds of Albany and will be an adventure you can tell the tale of for many years into the future. 5. USS Slater A different side of America's great history can be found at the USS Slater, which is nestled into the waters of the great Hudson River. This is America's last remaining ship from WWII and is a constant reminder of the tough battles fought. The ship has undergone a 10-year restoration that has returned it to its former glory, making it even more special. The ship also operates as a museum, which houses a remarkably unique collection of war artefacts and collectables. This is an ideal place to visit if you are interested in war history as it will open your eyes even further.
