Escape To Colorado Springs

Pike's Peak and the Garden of the Gods

Pike's Peak and the Garden of the Gods

Colorado Springs may be only the second most populous city in the US state of Colorado, but it is definitely the most popular. Located just east of the geographic centre of the state, Colorado Springs is nestled at the base of America's most famous mountains, Pikes Peak, at the eastern edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains.

Highly regarded as one of the country's "best places to live", Colorado Springs is also a fantastic place to visit, especially on a family holiday or couple's getaway.

Since it was originally developed as a vacation spot, there are plenty of fun activities to take part it, and amazing attractions to see. So when planning your holiday here, be sure to keep the following attractions in mind.

1. Garden of the Gods

The majestic Garden of the Gods is nestled on 1,360 acres of prime land and is a truly breathtaking area. The gardens are full of weird and surreal red sandgate rock formations that rise in a God-like manner, giving the gardens their unique name.

The park is best explored by exploring the numerous well-maintained nature trails that can be found throughout the park. From whatever position you are in, you will be greeted with stunning 300 degree views of towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop or snow-capped Pike's Peak and awe-inspiring blue skies. This park is an ideal destination for a picnic or simply to just soak up a truly amazing and unique atmosphere.

2. Pike's Peak

Nestled at the foothills of Pike's Peak, Colorado Springs enjoys a picturesque backdrop that cannot only be viewed, but experienced too. Pike's Peak is a mountain situated in the front range of the Rocky Mountains, just 10 miles east of the actual city.

The peak itself is home to several visitor centres which are a great place to start your adventure of the mountain. Some of the centres also feature a gift shop or restaurant, which offer perfect opportunities for you to remember your experience here forever.

The mountain can easily be explored by driving to the peak and this will reward you with some stunning views of Colorado Springs and beyond. However, if you wish to undertake an entirely different experience, there is also the option of walking, hiking or cycling the trail. This will put you back in touch with nature and will allow you to experience the mountain's unique diversity.

3. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

From carousel and train rides, to animal feedings and talks, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has enough events and attractions to keep you amused and entertained for hours on end. Take the kids on a journey on the Mountain Sky Ride, The Shongololo Choo Choo or a pony ride.

They will also be fascinated with animal habitats such as Rogers Shrine, The Loft, My Big Backyard and the Budgie Buggies. These exhibits are home to exciting animals like the hippos, beats, African lions, penguins and elephants, and will enchant and surprise them so that they will be begging to see more.

4. Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame

A visit to Colorado Springs simply wouldn't be complete without immersing yourself in the rodeo way of life. The Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame displays the perfect showcase of America's favourite sport. Established in 1979, this museum is hard to miss, mostly due to the half life-sized bronze statue of Casey Tibbs in his necktie, which rests in front of the museum.

Once you enter the actual building itself you will come across exhibits that feature memorabilia from over 160 inductees that fill the Hall of Champions. Walking the long corridors will allow you to explore rodeo's rich past, revel in the present and imagine the future.

5. Ghost Town Museum

Take a journey 100 years into the past at the Ghost Town Museum and you will discover the true preservation of Colorado's western past. A visit here will take you on an historic trip back to the kind of old west town that used to be prominent within this area in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

As you journey through this museum you will be able to relive the racy days of the old west, when miners dug for gold and cowboys rode thr range at this reconstructed ghost town and museum.

Colorado Springs is the ultimate holiday destination because it is just bursting with exciting things to see and do. A strong focus on the past ensures an appreciation for the future and allows visitors to recognise just how special this country is.
