Des Moines is the capital and most populous city of Iowa and is a truly beautiful city to visit. Originally named after the Des Moines River, this city is Iowa's cultural centre and is among the most beautiful capitals in the US. 2. Iowa State Capitol

The 23-karat golden dome of the State Capitol building shines prominently over the city of Des Moines and is a favourite of sight seers. This building signifies the prodigious spirit of Iowa and is ideal for those wishing to experience the city's history. It is also pure example of some of the nation's finest 19th century architecture, making it popular with photographers and snap-happy tourists alike.

3. State Historical Museum

Housed in a beautiful modern granite and glass structure, just in front of the State Capital, the State Historical Museum is a must-see. Its exhibits explore the people, places, events and issues of Iowa's past, depicting an exciting and adventurous story.

4. Des Moines Art Centre

Highly regarded as a world-class museum, the Des Moines Art Centre is located right in the heart of the mid-west. It houses a dramatic collection, with a strong emphasis on contemporary art. As you wander the halls you will also notice a strong representation of art from the 19th and 20th centuries, which demonstrates the unique diversity of this amazing place.

5. Salisbury House and Gardens

For a further insight into Des Moines' heritage, drop by to Salisbury House and Gardens. This beautiful mansion was built in the 1920's by Carl Weeks and always had the intention of becoming a museum. Today, it houses nearly 10,000 historic items collected by the Weeks family and is a truly wonderful place to visit.
