Spring Into Springfield
The Abraham Lincoln Statue Not to be confused with the Springfield in "The Simpsons", Illinois' state capital, Springfield, is a truly historic city, that should be visited at least once, if only for a few days.
Springfield is the centrepiece of Illinois' political activity, most likely because it is 'the land of Lincoln'. This city is home to a myriad of wonderful historic sites, world-class museums, unique special events and intriguing cultural activities. This All-American Midwestern city is packed full of exciting things to see and do and is just begging for you to discover it. 1. Illinois State Museum Located on the south side of the State Capitol complex, the Illinois State Museum is a city highlight and is popular with tourists and locals alike. The exhibits also allow you to experience some thrilling audio and visual effects, life-sized dioramas and thousands of authentic fossils. These displays will open your eyes to the state's history, offering pleasant surprises you may never have known existed. 3. Hensen Robinson Zoo The Henson Robinson Zoo is home to more than 300 animals native to Australia, Africa, Asia and North and South America. Over 90 species of native and exotic animals are housed here among naturalistic exhibits. Special events are held throughout the year and provide many hands-on experiences for children and adults alike. 4. The Local Parks If there is something Springfield does better than its rich history, it would have to be its parks. Multiple parks are scattered throughout the city and can be found around almost every corner. Some of the more popular of these include Adam's Wildlife Sanctuary, Lake Victoria, Lincoln Memorial, Dreamland and Washington Park. These parks are ideal for picnicking, hiking, cycling, or simply if you wish to breathe in some fresh air and escape the rat race of the city. Christine Barton |
