Washington DC, the capital of America and one of the most powerful cities in the modern world.

Sounds intriguing doesnt it? It is - and its this intrigue that entices hordes of tourists every year to gaze upon the centers of American government, legislation and politics that are so influential in the world today.

But there is more to this city than the large government buildings and the political attractions - it has stunning cityscapes based around the banks of the Potomac river, and a rich culture that has arisen from a long history.

The locals are friendly, there are a number of natural attractions nearby and the tropical climate makes for some hot summer days.

1. Smithsonian Institute

This is THE American educational institute. It is basically the world's largest museum complex, consisting of 19 museums. It also contains 9 research centers, making it a focal point for science and development in the country. The museum collection contains over 136 million artifacts, divided up between such prestigious institutions as the African Art Museum and the American History Museum.

The Smithsonian is for anyone with a thirst with knowledge - its perfect for all age groups but requires a lot of planning and decision making about which parts of it to see.

2. The 3 Houses of Government

These are probably the biggest draw cards to DC. The US Capitol Building (on Capitol Hill) is the seat of government for US Congress, the place where the politicians meet and make decisions whose effects are felt all over the world.

The White House is of course the official residence of the President and of the First Family, and no trip to DC would be complete without a look at this marvel of the modern world. Tours can be taken, and its advised you pop in at the White House Visitor Center before organiszng one. Its many exhibits will enhance your tour. The third house is the US supreme Court, the highest point of legislation in the country and a visually stunning buildings too.

3. The National Zoo

Set in Woodley Park, this is actually part of the Smithsonian Institute, but its world class collection of animals and the stunning habitats they are housed in warrants its own mention. Its free and open to the public, and contains animals from all over the world, from African predators like cheetahs to large bumbling elephants to giant pandas and all sorts of apes and monkeys!

A great outing for kids and adults alike.

4. Georgetown

This historic neighborhood is one of the oldest in DC, and consists of quaint cobblestone streets lined with heritage style buildings that house upmarket shopping centers and lots of restaurants and bars. It is a vibrant part of town that has a rich tapestry of cultures, and you will also find Georgetown University here. Its pretty location on the banks of the Potomac River make it the ideal tourist hot spot.

5. Great Falls Park

Hop in your rental car and drive to this unique park which lies 15 minutes from the city. The Potomac River flows through the narrow Mather Gorge in a series of rapids, making for great photo opportunities. Picnicking and hiking are common in the park as are other outdoor pursuits such as cycling. Swimming in the river is dangerous and therefore prohibited.
