Ten Simple RV Towing Tips

1. Know the Basics

Before you even consider towing your RV or something behind it, take some time to get to know what is involved. Make sure you are aware of all your RV terms and have at least practiced driving an RV beforehand. You should also have a good understanding of weight distribution as this will essentially determine what you can and cannot tow.

2. Know your numbers

Knowing what you want to tow and how much it will weigh, along with the weight of your RV is essential to the process. You will be able to gain an understanding of this by simply reading the manufacturer's manual, which outlines information on correct weight distribution.

3. Distribution of Weight

When it comes to weight distribution there are several things to be aware of including: the Gross Axle Weight Rating, ensuring the center of gravity is kept low; making sure cargo is secured tightly and; distributing weight evenly in front, back, left and right.

4. The Hitching of the Wagon

When it comes to selecting the appropriate hitches and tow bars, you must ensure that they are rated to handle the load, in conjunction with the actual towing capacity of the towing vehicle. The easiest way to do this is to hitch up and unhitch a few times so that you become familiar with how it is done.

5. Towing Compatibility

Another important thing to keep in mind is whether the two vehicles (i.e. the vehicle towing and the object being towed) can operate effectively together. The most obvious things to keep in mind are whether the brakes and lights still work on both, while connected.

6. Adequate mirrors?

Mirrors are one of the most important safety features of any RV and if they are not adequate for seeing behind and beside you, they will need to be changed.

7. Practice makes perfect

As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect and this could not be truer when it comes to your RV and its towing capabilities. Before you head out on the open road practice driving, turning, stopping (and backing up for towable trailers) in an area away from heavy traffic. You should also keep an eye on your mirrors to ensure that they are in the correct position.

8. Wind Resistance

Swaying vehicles often cause majority of RV accidents so ensuring the weight is distributed evenly in your vehicle is a must. If you do experience some trailer sway, ease on the brakes and take it a bit easy!

9. Don't tow passengers

Passengers travelling in a towed apparatus is never a good idea so DON'T DO IT!

10.Always double-check

It never hurts to check things twice, so before you take off after hitching up your vehicle, give it a once over to ensure everything in place. This will ensure your safety and the safety and well-being of your passengers also.
